Our traffic is spiking this week after a brief span of peace and harmony over the holidays, which is to say the site all but died onnaccounta my own deluded, dumbfuck errors.

The inmates running the asylum model hit some speed bumps. Almost every last one of us directly involved abused our authority - my own noob self included - settling long festering sore-scores, micro managing, offending each other, and walking away in disgust. Opsec and George Orr were noteworthy exceptions.

The idea of making operation transparent so any of a handful can manage in the absence of others was sound enough in theory but the simplest solutions were only obvious in hindsight, usually after a wrenching uproar. And sometimes, saying nothing at all was worse, not better. Barking anger never worked.

First thing I learned was any pittance High Street's ad revenue might generate won't defray the site's minimal expense. All but basic function - like image hosting - will have to rely on your generosity. Yeah, so much for the idea of underwriting a High Street blowout.

Other painful lessons include:

-Replace eye-bleached image tags with urls without fanfare and move posts offline only under duress. Never delete.

-Delegating control to any one person is not a good idea.

-Mixing original news reporting with a social networking site is stupid.

-Stipulating two sets of eyeballs on every front page post is mandatory. It's too easy to forget many of our fellow lunatics post when they're thoroughly hammered.

I'm probably forgetting something but thanks for listening. Feel free to add your own thoughts.

Bill

You already know how I feel on nearly all those counts, Bill, so I'm not going to reiterate anything as if it's open for debate. Most of the crap I get [that is not of my own making] seems to stem from the fact that some people can't get used to the format change. Cruel:Linklist::High-Street:Forum.

It's not really the obvious distinction it may appear to be. Some folks just don't want more options, or more interaction, and seem to resent anyone else who does. And nearly all forums go through these situations in the first six months of operation. 9 out of 10 of them fold completely, within that period.

Take full advantage of the traffic spike. Figure out where people are coming from, and find a way to solicit more. I think everyone here would begrudge you a PayPal button in the footer or sidebar, as that AdSense is not worth the digital real estate it occupies.

Don't get to hung up on that "transparency" buzzword, either. Not editing/deleting posts and giving people the freedom to make complete asses of themselves (drunk or not) are already taken for granted. You don't really explain everything, and you wouldn't want to. Maybe it's just a difference of opinion on the meaning of transparency, but no kitchen can function if everyone is a top chef. Maybe a bar can work if everyone's a bartender, but they can't all be drinking and serving at once.

The only thing I can think of to ask is:  Is orangeplus still around?

Oh--and I think when Aleph said, "everyone here would begrudge you a PayPal button," he meant "no one would begrudge you," in which case, I agree.  I've donated money to far less worthy causes this past month alone.

I can't imagine where the traffic is coming from, but I did recently shill High-Street in another forum populated by people I deemed worthy to come here (if one mention in one post can be considered a shill).  Maybe the MySpace page is paying off?

If bandwidth is a problem, a simple change should help alleviate that.

I'd also kick into the beer fund if there's somewhere I can send a check (don't get me started about Paypal).

I would be more than happy donate some moolah to this site. If you would tell me where to send it and about how much you are talking about.I could send a money order to you.(I would send a check but I don't want you crazy fuckers with my account number.

Being that this is .org, would any donation be tax deductable?

I think Choad would have to save some fuzzy kittens first. Maybe a BigLOLcat?

Well I can say I am happy with not being admin.  And any spike in traffic is a good thing.

Right now I got hit with a shitcrapload of car repairs and (yay) dental work along with 2 sick cats that needed vetcare.  (Total cost: $4500 !!!) So I am lucky I am eating this week.

However, in about 2 months I will be better off and willing to throw down a 20 or so.

I had my first root canal today.  Joy.

Thanks RT and hang on to your money. Ask George if my say so isn't enough, your teeth will need it.

I'll look into the paperwork I need to establish a nonprofit in the next few days.

Anyone heard from HK recently? Orangeplus says he'll wander back by and by.

I think you're going to have a tough time of it, but try here and here.

I'm sorry to hear it's been such a pain in the ass so far.  I didn't have any reason for deserting when I did mid December, other than I got two new jobs and was working WWWAAAYYY too much to deal with this, plus I've got crazytown Mr. Fucktard to deal with, so holidays were not fun.

With my two new jobs, I should be able to donate a SMMAAAALLLL amount.  But I'd be glad to.  You definitely deserve it.

Rcade seems to have kept his sanity by remaining aloof and apart, never counting himself among the mooing herd. For good or ill, I'm one of you and... oops, it's milking time!

Bless your heart Choad.  Of course, by the way, you are assuming that Rcade kept his sanity, or indeed had any to begin with.

I know what you can do:  Tell everyone that you've sold the site to someone else so you can post as a regular wiithout all the other bullshit, but remain the decision maker.  That way you don't have to explain yourself... a "Man behind the curtain" so to speak.

But we already pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

It's not a curtain, goddamit!  It's a mumu, and it was a gift from my grandmother.

Believe me, those 2 need to get a job soon or I'm kicking them out on their furry asses.

Rolling watermelons is not out of the question.
