This is only the beginning....

The 121 killings ranged from shootings and stabbings to bathtub drownings and fatal car crashes resulting from drunken driving, the newspaper said. All but one of those implicated was male.

About a third of the victims were girlfriends or relatives, including a 2-year-old girl slain by her 20-year-old father while he was recovering from wounds sustained in Iraq.

A quarter of the victims were military personnel. One was stabbed and set afire by fellow soldiers a day after they all returned from Iraq.

Still leaves you safer than the population as a whole does - just check out your knock-on links from the same article:

Incestual, vengence homosexual rape

Baby tossing

Stop knocking up my woman

and of course Orenthal J. Simpson who doesn't even rate a link (or catchy nickname) any longer

Anyone of these people could be veterans. The gook is a refugee, so, by default a veteran of a foreign war...

Seems like the cross-pollination has gotten almost allergy-worthy, Lurker. Where the original NYT article showed up on my site, now it's a reprint from a frippin' ISP. But yes, you're right. It's only the beginning...of their series on the walking [mentally] wounded. Ah, well, teh Intarwebz have their Diggz.

I'm not actually going to weigh in much on the psych value, here. I'd get too much shit for putting so many words together in one place. I still think it's a Martha Stewart-y good thing that they compiled hundreds of "local news" items to demonstrate a national phenomenon.

Bottom line: If the DoD took care of these guys half as well as it promised, then a lot less of this would be happening. There's inadequate aftercare for PTSD because they train people to survive, not to live. I consider that a shameful way to honor our servicemen's commitment.

[M]ilitary health care officials are seeing a spectrum of psychological issues, with an estimated half of the returning National Guard members, 38 percent of soldiers and 31 percent of marines reporting mental health problems, according to a Pentagon task force.

In the mid-1980s, with so many Vietnam veterans behind bars that Vietnam Veterans of America created chapters in prisons, veterans made up a fifth of the nation’s inmate population.

Seth Strasburg, 29, displays an imposing, biker-style presence. He has a shaved head, bushy chin beard and tattoos scrolled around his thick arms and neck, one of which quotes, in Latin, a Crusades-era dictum: “Kill them all. God will know his own.”

Yeah, that's the original article. "Seth Strasburg, right, is serving a prison term of 22 to 36 years for shooting and killing Thomas Tiffany Varney." I guess I'd shoot anyone named Tiffany, myself.

Much as I despise Ira Glass, this was actually a good program.

I don't know who Ira Glass is (I assume he's the announcer-guy on that show?), but I love that show.  It's not so much the narrators, but the way that they let the interviews tell most of the story, and the fact that they actually find interesting people to interview instead of another celebrity or politician.

The episode about the guy who thinks he's doing some Indian workers a favor by bringing them to the US, taking their passports, and keeping them on his ranch living in a shack full of bunkbeds is intermittently hilarious and appalling.

Yes. Ira, originally from Baltimore, was irritating when I knew him vaguely in Rhode Island almost 30 years ago... in that inimitable and familiar ego-grating yid way most of us here would immediately recognize. He's also peerless at what he does.

Here is maybe the best radio hour anyone has ever produced:

God-damn Emily,  you really are in another world.  You have your head so far up your ass, it's almost amusing.  Except for the fact that you believe what you spew.  Is it really a military inclination to throw children off a bridge?  You are completely full of shit.  Maybe your boyfriend Taint can plumb that shit-plug out of your ass for you.

Sorry Dude - I've been where these guys are - your pot shots at them are at best cowardly and underhanded.

Come back when you know what the fuck you're talking about, or maybe when you've actually done something for someone other than yourself.  We had enough of your type in the seventies - FOAD bitch

I have done more constructive and useful things for others than your pea-brain could imagine.  I can't wait to hear that your "little guy" has shot you in the fucking face.

You are correct - I've not handled a loaded weapon since Christ was a Corporal - I've not used a chainsaw lately either.  Not much call for either here in suburbia.

But I gave you your twenty cuz I was being a dumb ass.

“God hates the U.S. Marines,” according to a Westboro Baptist announcement of their plans to picket Camp Lejeune, N.C. to protest the death of a pregnant Marine.

Wake it and shake it! Where'd everyone go? It's a cold & slow day in hell when this is news.

It is a pity that just a select few of the Corps do not have the mission of "dealing" with these terrorists.

Oh come now Sarge. Only a very very select few get to actually deal with terrorists.

The boys in Afghanistan are surely getting the short end of the deals made by men pictured above.
