I remember talking to an Indian friend of mine when War of the Worlds came out (the Tom Cruise one, I'm not really that old), and he said that aliens like that could never take over India. They'd start zapping people, and zapping people, and zapping people, and finally just when they think they've gotten everybody, the movies would get out and even more people would suddenly appear from the theaters. They'd probably just give up and go home.
