This again? (not precisely a hat, but the whole caning thing has been done recently) What exactly are we supposed to do about it or feel? Are they just anarchistic barbarians, or are they meting out justice as it is known locally and it just offends our sensibilities? I'd rather be caned than have some ne'er-do-well Christian smile at me while condemning me behind their veneer of brainwashed propriety.

Muslim Khan, a Taliban spokesman, defended the punishment as appropriate under Islamic law, but said it should have been applied by a pre-pubescent boy in a private setting. "She had to be punished,"
The best way to embed an enduring idea within a culture for generations to come is to fetishize it in the mind of a pre-pubescent boy.

My first thought after reading this was "Really? You'd rather be beaten than be on the receiving end of an insincere smile?"
My second thought was "Where can I find a boat-load of Christians and send them to Pale's house armed with canes?"

This may prove to be a pivotal event in the weakening of Islam. Seeing a male religious official beat the crap out of a woman on TV “for her own good” has a way of causing adults to rethink their beliefs and turning children against a religion that would endorse such brutality.
In an earlier age, it took a long time to convince people in the West that use of the rack, rectal pear, strappado, and burning at the stake were evils perpetrated by a monstrous religion that had warped ideas about God. Had TV and the Internet existed, The Inquisition might not have lasted for centuries.

Don't exaggerate. OK, it does drag on a bit if you watch all three parts together. But bits of it are some of my favorite MP moments.
Come to think of it, it was better on the record album.
